Sandwell General Hospital
Caring and Compassionate, Accessible and Responsive, Professional and Knowledgeable, Open and Accountable, Engaging and Empowering - these are the values that underpin Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.
The Trust is one of the largest in the West Midlands. It has a reputation for providing fast, efficient and high quality care from three hospitals- City Hospital on the Dudley Road in Birmingham, Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich and Rowley Regis Community Hospital in Rowley Regis.
MRSA bacteraemia and C.Difficile infection rates at the Trust are amongst the lowest of any Trust of its size and type and a programme of work focusing on patient nutrition and hospital cleanliness is having a positive impact on the hospital environment and experiences of hospital patients.
Sandwell General Hospital and City Hospital are busy acute hospitals providing many specialist services and a broad range of emergency services, including Accident & Emergency at both sites. A large proportion of surgical procedures are carried out as day case or short stay surgery and the Trust is a leading provider of minimally invasive surgery that enables patients to be treated faster, more comfortably and to recover more quickly.
Rowley Regis Community Hospital was opened in 1994 and provides continuing care and rehabilitation. It also has a range of outpatient and diagnostic facilities.
The Birmingham Treatment Centre opened on the City Hospital site in November 2005. This £35m development provides state of the art facilities for one-stop diagnosis and treatment. It includes an Ambulatory Surgical Unit with six theatres, extensive imaging facilities, an integrated breast care centre, teaching accommodation and outpatient facilities.
A new £18m Emergency Services Centre opened on the Sandwell site in April 2005. It incorporates a comprehensive A&E facility, Emergency Assessment Unit and Cardiac Care Unit.
The Trust hosts the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre which is a supra-regional specialist facility, as well as the Pan-Birmingham Gynaecological Oncology Centre and Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre.
As one of the leading acute Trusts in moving services into the community, many outpatient clinics in a wide range of specialties take place in health facilities across Sandwell and Birmingham so that patients are able to attend their outpatient appointment nearer to their home.
The Trust is also working in partnership with local PCTs and local authorities to develop plans for a new acute hospital in Smethwick with community hospitals on the existing sites, other community health facilities and new ways of providing care closer to where people live and in their own homes. These plans are known as the 'Right Care Right Here Programme' and have the backing of NHS West Midlands and approval as a national priority scheme by the Department of Health. The new hospital is planned to open in 2016.
Aside from being one of the largest providers of acute patient services in the Midlands, the Trust also has a substantial research agenda, focussing on ophthalmology, cardiology, rheumatology, gynaecological oncology and neurology.
In addition the Trust has a major staff, patient and public engagement agenda, with staff engagement led through its trailblazing Listening into Action programme, and a highly active membership of patients and local people. Customer care is at the heart of the Trust's culture, with nine promises to patients (and other staff) that include making them feel welcome, listening to them and going the extra mile. The Trust's moto, "Where everyone matters" was created by frontline staff and sets the tone for the organisation to follow.
The Trust was established in April 2002 and has a budget of around £380 million. It employs more than 6Category: NHS Hospitals
