Salisbury District Hospital
At Salisbury District Hospital, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of clinical care, which includes general acute and emergency services to approximately 200,000 people in Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire. Specialist services such as burns, plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate, genetics and rehabilitation extend to a much wider population of more than three million people. The Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre at Salisbury District Hospital covers most of southern England with a population of approximately 11 million people. Trust staff provide outpatient clinics in community hospitals in Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire. Specialist staff hold outreach clinics in hospitals within the Wessex area. In total, the Trust employs over 4000 members of staff and this includes full and part-time staff.
Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing high quality care to patients in a clean and safe environment and meets all the core standards in the Healthcare Commission's Annual Health Check. The Trust is rated as being excellent for cleanliness and food by the National Patient Safety Agency and has one of the lowest rates in the region for infections such as MRSA and Clostridium Dificille. We know that our patients want quick and easy access to treatment and Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust has achieved current waiting time targets, and is working to reduce waiting times further.
In 2006 the Trust opened a new £24 million extension to the main hospital building. This resulted in the regional burns service, elderly care wards, orthopaedics, plastic surgery and maxillo facial outpatients moving to modern, purpose built facilities. A tradition of an excellent financial record has continued with NHS Foundation Trust status, enabling the Trust to make further significant improvements in facilities and services that enhance patient care.
Patient and Public Involvement is considered a strength, and this can be seen recently with staff working closely with local schoolchildren to help design a new Children's Centre which is scheduled for completion in 2010. The Trust benefits from a high level of support from the local community and Foundation Trust membership continues to grow each year as more people decide that they would like to learn more about their local hospital or actively get involved in the planning of services. We also enjoy considerable support and generosity from local people who support the Stars Appeal, which has already enhanced children's facilities and equipped a new state of the art laparoscopic theatre suite. The Stars Appeal is now raising money to equip the new Children's centre. The Trust also enjoys considerable support from its volunteers with 700 people registered with the voluntary services department. Volunteers are valued highly with the Trust with more younger people now looking to do voluntary work at Salisbury District Hospital. The annual Young Volunteer Award recognises achievement in this area.
Patient safety, service improvement, patient and public involvement, customer service and staff wellbeing are all key priorities for the Trust. These core themes are now linked to all service planning as part of a new Trust initiative called 'Striving for Excellence'. The aim of the initiative is to continually improve the care provided for patients and provide the support that staff need to carry out their work.
Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust is, during 2009 engaging with staff and the public on it's Long Term Strategy which will build on the work done under "Striving for Excellence " and ensure that the Trust is able to respond to the economic, political and social factors which will challenge the NHS over the coming years.
