Freeman Hospital

Welcome to the Freeman Hospital. Our services here range from general surgery, hip and knee replacement and digital hearing aids, through to the latest developments in restoring hearing or treating complex liver, pancreatic and kidney and heart related diseases and also the treatment of cancer.

In autumn 2011 the UK's first Institute of Transplantation will be completed at the Freeman Hospital to provide the very best transplantation outcomes for patients and make increased use of donor organs. The new purpose built facilities will bring together all stages of transplantation as well as research and development all under one roof. We already have an international reputation for our pioneering expertise in transplant surgery for both adults and children as the UK's first successful heart transplant for a child was undertaken at the Freeman Hospital in 1987.

The Freeman hospital is also one of Europe's leading lung transplant centres - having performed both the first single lung transplant and the first double lung transplant in Europe. We were also the first to introduce a 'mechanical heart' service in 2003, keeping adults and children alive until a suitable donor heart is available.

The Institute of Transplantation is one of the most exciting medical developments in North East England. The Freeman has a well-deserved reputation for the quality of its facilities and we take great care to ensure you are treated in a clean, modern, and friendly environment. Some of the unique facilities of the Freeman Hospital are outlined below: €¢ We are the only hospital in the country to provide the full range of Cardiothoracic Surgery for adults and children, including heart and lung Transplantation under one roof. Our facilities include a specially equipped suite of four theatres with access to a large, state-of-the-art intensive care unit for adults, and a separate paediatric intensive care unit to care for children following heart or lung surgery. €¢ The Northern Centre for Cancer Care was opened at the Freeman Hospital in 2009 as part of an ongoing £300m investment programme in The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The state of the art centre provides specialist care for patients with cancer and kidney disorders. €¢ The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre is at the forefront of research into cancer. It offers patients access to early trials and potential new treatments and works closely with the Imaging and Research Centre to improve the diagnosis and study the effects of new drugs, which are often €œfirst in human€ trials. The Centre works closely with the National Cancer Networks to ensure that patients get offered the best options for treatment. €¢ The Regional Urology Centre is based at the Freeman Hospital which is recognised as having one of the top clinical research programmes in Europe. €¢ A Specialist Sleep Studies Team - one of only a few in the UK - operates from the Freeman Hospital caring for patients with a wide range of sleeping disorders. €¢ Both the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre and the SIM Centre are located at the Freeman Hospital providing training of the highest quality to surgeons and healthcare professionals from the UK and Europe.

Royal Victoria Infirmary

Welcome to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). We've been providing healthcare to the communities of Newcastle and the North East for over 250 years. But there's nothing old-fashioned about our services. As part of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the healthcare services we provide are among the safest and most advanced in the country, ranging from emergency medicine: the new Level 1 Trauma Centre which will be providing A & E Services from October 2010, our Minor Injuries Unit and Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic, to our pioneering burns unit and our innovative dermatology unit, the sole provider in the region of the leading edge Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancer. We also have one of only two €œbubble€ units in the UK helping infants with severe immune system problems.

The Maternity Department at the RVI is one of the UK's largest, helping to bring over 6,500 babies into the world every year. And with our consultant-led service, you know you're in the safest hands possible however your pregnancy develops.

We have an Acute Stroke Unit staffed by a multi-disciplinary team of experts in the field of stroke medicine who provide dedicated and specialist stroke care for everyone who comes here. We offer rapid and early diagnosis following a suspected stroke using advanced, modern technology including CT scanners so that we can commence the right treatment for you as quickly as possible to help rapid recovery.

The Regional Neurosciences Centre will also be housed at the RVI from autumn 2010. The Centre is one of the top regional units in the UK providing a comprehensive range of specialist tests, treatments and procedures for all types of neurological conditions involving the brain and nervous system. Treatment is available to anyone who lives in and around the North East of England but some highly specialised services are provided for patients from all areas of the UK and also from overseas.

We are the major Regional Burns Treatment Centre for the North East and North Cumbria providing comprehensive, high quality care and support for patients of all ages who have suffered a burns injury and also for their families. We also have specialist intensive care facilities available to treat patients with severe and complex burn injuries.

Our Falls and Syncope Service, the largest of its kind in Europe, helps to relieve the stress and discomfort of balance, black-out and dizziness, so that our patients can continue to enjoy mobile and independent lives.

The Ophthalmology department has one of the UK's largest cataract treatment centres, but also offers the most advanced treatments of age-related eye problems such as ARMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration), the major cause of blindness in the UK.

Exciting changes are happening in autumn 2010 at the RVI. The Great North Children's Hospital is due to be completed - and this will be the first time almost all children's services for the North East will be under one roof - housed in a state of the art building. Especially designed to meet the needs of modern medicine, The Great North Children's Hospital will provide welcoming surroundings appropriate for children, teenagers and their families and carers. More paediatric services will be provided than any other hospital outside of London this includes specialist services as well as general healthcare services for children and young people.

Accident and Emergency services will transfer from out-dated accommodation at Newcastle General Hospital in autumn 2010 to brand new state of the art facilities the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The RVI is well placed to be a regional trauma centre with the facilities and skills to treat major injury and trauma cases, no matter what the complexity.

The New Victoria Wing at the RVI has welcomed patients since 2009. The new wing is six storeys high and has a floor area equivalent to five football pitches! The New Victoria Wing is at the heart of the hospital and currently provides access to all departments at the RVI.
