The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust provides a range of general acute hospital services to a catchment area comprising approximately 326,000 people in, and close to, the east Suffolk area. The Trust also provides a number of tertiary and specialist services, such as spinal surgery and cancer surgery to a wider population, as well as outreach services in a number of clinical specialties. Across its 46-acre site, the Trust employs nearly 3,200 whole time equivalent NHS staff. In June 2008, the Garrett Anderson Centre opened, and provides the Trust with significant opportunities to improve clinical services to patients.
The £26million centre is the biggest development at the hospital for more than 30 years. The four-storey centre houses an accident and emergency department with a dedicated children's A&E, a 22-bed critical care unit with four isolation rooms to help fight infection, a modern day surgery suite with four theatres and an area dedicated for children and a 40-bed ward for elective care with 20 single rooms, all en suite.

Nuffield Health Ipswich Hospital
Nuffield Hospital Ipswich is a fairly large private facility. It has 60 beds, and five operating theatres. Two of its major operating theatres have laminar flow - this is a special clean air system which reduces the risk of infection during operations. A range of cancer services is offered at Nuffield Hospital Ipswich. The hospital is able to perform surgery to treat both breast and bowel cancer, and can also provide chemotherapy to treat the disease. Both units are BUPA-approved. Palliative care is also available for patients whose illness is terminal.
The hospital does not operate on children under the age of three, but is able to perform procedures for children between three and 12. There is always at least one member of staff with Paediatric Advanced Life Support training on site, so help can be sought quickly in the event of an emergency. Diagnostic services available at the hospital include CT and MRI scans - much better than conventional x-rays at imaging the soft tissue in the body. Bone densitometry scans are also available - these can help to diagnose conditions such as osteoporosis. Category:
