West Suffolk Hospital
West Suffolk Hospital, which is run by West Suffolk Hospital NHS Trust, puts patients firmly at the centre of service delivery. A high level of clinical quality and patient safety is matched by a strong emphasis on Customer Care to deliver a good patient experience.
In 2007 the Trust was scored 'excellent' by the Healthcare Commission for the quality of its services and the Patient Environment Action Team assessed the food, excellent; environment, good and privacy and dignity, good. In the national patient survey patients' rating of the hospital food has placed the Trust consistently in the top 20% of NHS acute Trusts and in the top 20% banding in providing help to patients to eat their food.
Healthcare associated infection rates have significantly reduced at the hospital over the past year, with the number of cases of C difficile falling by 67% and MRSA by nearly 50%. Patient safety is a number one priority for the Trust and significant investment has been made in this area including a new cohort (isolation) area for patients with C difficile, a rapid cleaning team, additional sinks and sensor (no touch) taps. Supporters of the Clean your hands Campaign, the Trust provides alcohol gel at the entrance to all wards and by the patient's bed. There are posters and signs across the hospital site promoting the importance of good hand hygiene. Every target has been met in the push towards making sure that no patient will wait longer than 18 weeks from GP referral to treatment. There is now a maximum wait for a first appointment at the hospital of six weeks across specialities. This is a dramatic improvement, especially in some areas such as echocardiography (heart ultrasounds) where a few years ago people would have had to wait 20 weeks. The Trust continues to deliver the national targets for cancer waiting times This year the Maternity Department met 57 quality and safety standards to gain Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts Level 3 - the only such unit in the East of England to achieve this.
Set in a 19-hectare parkland site West Suffolk Hospital provides a full range of acute services with all associated inpatient and outpatient facilities. Recent new developments include a £3.5 million upgrade to the Radiology Department including new CT Scanner, MRI Scanner and Gamma Camera. Services for diabetic patients have been brought together in a new one-stop diabetes centre. A Macmillan Unit has been purpose built for the care of people with cancer and a dedicated Eye Treatment Centre has provided additional capacity for the ophthalmic services. The Trust has a Day Surgery Unit, where children and adults are treated and go home on the same day. More recently the Trust has opened a new Endoscopy Suite and new Stroke Therapy Rooms will be fully functional in July 2008
The Trust is committed to delivering care in locations convenient and accessible to local people. Many clinicians, working alongside primary care colleagues, provide services within community facilities in the following towns; Newmarket, Sudbury, Stowmarket, Haverhill in Suffolk and Thetford in Norfolk.
The hospital has shops and a restaurant for staff, patients and visitors. The recently extended and improved Courtyard Cafe near the front entrance offers a variety of good value meals in a relaxed environment. There is a bank in the hospital which is available for staff, visitors and patients.
There are car parks at the front and rear of the hospital and the same charges apply throughout the site. The main front car park (A) is for patients and visitors only (Pay on Foot system).
The Trust is currently applying for NHS Foundation Trust status. If successful the Trust will be accountable to the local population through its public members and elected Board of Governors.
