Bristol Eye Hospital

Bristol Eye Hospital is one of the country's leading specialist hospitals with an international reputation for the treatment of diseases of the eye, and highly respected as a pioneer in research, education and clinical practice.

The hospital has 20 ophthalmic consultants, who work supported by a wide range of staff including orthoptists, optometrists, pharmacists and nurse practitioners.

The University of Bristol Department of Ophthalmology is attached to the hospital and leads its field in research into eye disease and the development of new treatments. The hospital also houses one of only two Corneal Transplant Banks in England, serving the whole of the south of the country. The hospital has been in the forefront of development in ophthalmology including the use of extended role nurses, innovative schemes for the long-term management of glaucoma patients, day case cataract surgery and numerous other fields.

Bristol Eye Hospital has begun a £1.6million refurbishment scheme to redevelop large parts of the clinical areas in the building, with work due to complete late in 2010. This is also the year that the hospital celebrates its bicentenary, and a programme of events is taking place throughout 2010.

Bristol Haematology& Oncology Centre

The Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre is the cancer treatment centre for Avon and Somerset. The centre provides specialist non-surgical treatment centre for people with cancer, and for people who do not have cancer but require specialist radiotherapy or haematology services. The centre is the only comprehensive care centre for haemophilia in the South West and is also the principal treatment centre designated for teenage and young adult cancer for the South West.

There is a mixture of inpatient and outpatient facilities including 49 inpatient beds on two wards (Ward 61 and Ward 62), 25 chairs and two day beds on two day units in oncology and haematology. There is also a radiotherapy treatment department with five linear accelerators, and an outpatients department which is currently being extended to 12 clinic rooms.

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children

The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) provides a comprehensive range of services for local children and is a centre for specialist care for families across the South-West and SouthWales.

The current purpose designed hospital opened on the 22nd April 2001. In April 2007, a further ward was opened to accommodate children's services from Southmead, with the long-term aim of centralising all hospital services for children in Bristol at one centre of excellence.

Bristol Royal Infirmary

The BRI is a teaching hospital with close links to Bristol University and provides acute medicine and surgery, critical care, trauma, orthopaedic and accident & emergency services to the population of the southern part of Bristol. It also provides the centre for cardio-thoracic services for the southwest region.

The Bristol Royal Infirmary has been providing care 'to benefit the poor sick' since 1737.

The hospital comprises three principal buildings, the original "Old Building", the King Edward VII Building, which stands opposite the Old Building on the north side of Upper Maudlin Street, and the Queens Building - which is also on the north side of of Upper Maudlin Street.

The BRI is linked to the Bristol Heart Institute which is a new £60m state of the art hospital that brings cardiology and cardiac surgery services together under one roof for the first time in Bristol.

The centre includes three catheter laboratories and a state of the art hybrid theatre, three inpatient wards for cardiac patients, a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Coronary Care Unit and an outpatients department.

The BHI opened to patients in May 2009 and in an average year the centre will carry out around 1,700 heart operations, perform 4,000 cardiology procedures, and treat around 15,000 outpatients.

The hospital has been designed in partnership with patients, staff and the public and will deliver a full range of diagnostic and interventional treatments for heart conditions, including primary angioplasty, to the people of Bristol, the South West and beyond.

St Michael's Hospital

St Michael's Hospital was built in 1974 and has historically housed maternity services that cover the south of the city. More recently, other services such as adult ENT and clinical genetics have also been developed on this site. We are proud of the services we offer, and of the environment in which these are delivered, particularly those for women and their babies, including gynaecology services, early pregnancy clinics, maternity services and a large Neonatal intensive care unit.

Spire Bristol Hospital

The Spire Hospital Bristol has 72 beds and provides a range of medical, surgical and diagnostic services. The hospital is able to perform heart bypass surgery, and also offers cardiac catheterisation, exercise ECG, coronary angioplasty and cardiac rehabilitation. There are four critical care beds, and always at least two members of staff on site with Advanced Life Support Training. A wide range of physiotherapy services are offered. Hydrotherapy is available, along with treatment for sports injury, and there is a rehabilitation gymnasium on site.

Spire Hospital Bristol is able to perform surgery for both breast and bowel surgery, but neither of these units is BUPA-approved. Although the hospital does not perform surgery on children under three, it will perform procedures on youngsters between three and 12. There are always at least two members of staff on site with Paediatric Advanced Life Support Training.
